Wed Study | April 9, 2025 | Sermon on the Mount | Session #9

00;00;00;00 - 00;00;23;07
Unknown
So glad that you're here tonight. I've got some good news for you. I'm sure that you have. Join me in praying for Brother Tommy. Yes. And he went to the oncologist today, and the oncologist said that there was no cancer. There.

00;00;23;09 - 00;00;47;06
Unknown
In fact, in fact, the oncologist said there was no cancer there. Once they got in there, it was benign. Now, they had told him that it was malignant. It caught it real early. But then when he got in there, it was no cancer. So praise God. Brother Tommy called me when he was leaving the doctor's office and he couldn't talk to me.

00;00;47;06 - 00;01;13;02
Unknown
Is crying so hard? But. But crying tears of joy. Amen. Amen. So I just wanted to share that thing. And brother Tommy wanted me to thank you for praying for him and for for for Rose as they walk through this time. Okay. So I'm going to ask John Aaron to lead us in our opening prayer. Let's pray. Let's pray.

00;01;13;04 - 00;01;31;15
Unknown
Father, we just thank you so much for the great news. Lord, you are our healer. God, you are just our sustainer. Lord, we just praise you for the great report for Brother Tommy Lord. We just thank you for doing miracles. God, You are. You're alive and you're at work, and you're involved in our lives, and. God.

00;01;31;15 - 00;01;52;03
Unknown
So we just thank you for this reminder. We thank you for for healing. Just it's such a just a godly man who means so much to to everyone in this room. And so, Lord, we thank you for that. God, as we're about to hear your word, will you prepare our hearts? Lord, would you move in this place?

00;01;52;05 - 00;02;09;00
Unknown
Father, you know each one of us and what we've come into this room with. You know what our day and our weeks have been like. You know what burdens we're carrying. Lord, God, your word says there may be pain in the night, but there's joy in the morning. So we thank you, and we thank you. Your mercies are new every morning.

00;02;09;00 - 00;02;29;07
Unknown
So right now, I pray y'all just quiet our spirits. You know, just open our hearts and our minds to hear your word, to receive your word and to know that you are on your throne and you are good God, thank you that you allow us to approach the throne room, throne room of grace to receive mercy in our time of need.

00;02;29;07 - 00;02;52;19
Unknown
So, Lord, we come to you and it's in Jesus name. I pray. And all God's people said Amen. Amen. Amen. Well, as you know, we're in a study through the sermon on the Mount. It's one of the the greatest section of the Bible that you'll ever find. Of course, all the Bibles. Good. Amen. Amen. And we. We're down in a section now.

00;02;52;21 - 00;03;45;25
Unknown
Verses 21 to the end of the chapter where there's some repeating, phrases that that gives us insight into what Jesus is really driving at in the sermon on the Mount. If you'll notice, verse 21, you have heard that the ancients were told, verse 22, but I say to you, and then verse 27, you have heard that it was said, verse 28 but I say to you, verse 31, it was said, verse 32, but I say to you, verse 33 again you have heard that the ancients were told, verse 34 but I say to you, verse 38, you have heard that it was said, verse 39 but I say to you, and verse 43,

00;03;45;25 - 00;04;20;14
Unknown
you have heard that it was said, verse 44 but I say to you so six different times in this, this very short passage in verses 21 through 48, we see Jesus using this same formula. Now why did he do that? Now remember this Jesus is laying out a kingdom agenda. Jesus is the King. He has a kingdom. It's an everlasting kingdom.

00;04;20;16 - 00;04;51;11
Unknown
And if you're a born again believer, you're a part of that kingdom. And Jesus is your king. Now, with him being king, you've got to understand that you and I are responsible to obey him and to make sure that our lives, our actions, our attitudes are shaped by what Jesus expects out of us. We don't have the right to free Willy and do what we want to do.

00;04;51;13 - 00;05;40;17
Unknown
Jesus was emphasizing that the the Pharisees and the scribes and religious muckety mucks of the day were focused on external behavior, okay, external behavior. And Jesus, when he said, but I say to you, he took what the Old Testament law said and took it to a deeper, more internal level where he, Jesus, is dealing with heart. I read in my Bible reading this week, I read where, the prophet said to King Asa, the eyes of the Lord moved to and fro throughout the earth, that he may strongly support those.

00;05;40;17 - 00;06;10;07
Unknown
Get this now whose heart is completely his. He didn't say the Lord supports, strongly supports those who has behavior or actions that line up with what, what what the Old Testament law say. He didn't say that. He said whose heart is completely here. So let me ask you a question. Where is your heart tonight? Do you have a heart for Jesus?

00;06;10;08 - 00;06;35;00
Unknown
Do you have a heart for obedience, for obeying him and making sure that your life is aligned with the Word of God, the will of God, and the way of God? I hope and pray that you can say tonight that your heart is with Jesus. Now that the section we're going to look at tonight, I was going I was going to try to finish this chapter.

00;06;35;03 - 00;07;07;28
Unknown
But as I work on the first part, we're going to look tonight at verse. Let me see it right here. Verses 38 to 42. I was planning on finishing, but I couldn't. It's just too much to cover in verses 38 to 42. Now, I want to speak to you tonight on this verses 38 to 42. I want to speak to you on the subject, going the extra mile.

00;07;08;00 - 00;07;42;13
Unknown
Going the extra mile. Late one summer evening in Broken Bow, Nebraska, a truck driver was worn out. He was hungry. He pulled into an all night truck stop and ordered his food. And when the food arrived, he would. He was chowing down. I mean, he was so hungry about that time. Three tough looking motorcyclists entered the truck stop and began to give the truck driver a lot of verbal abuse.

00;07;42;15 - 00;08;30;21
Unknown
One even grabbed his hamburger and another one grabbed some French fries. The truck driver calmly got up, took his ticket, went to the lady, paid for for his food, and walked out. When the waitress came back by the the three motorcyclists, one of them said to the waitress. Well, he's not much of a man, is she replied. I don't know about that, but he isn't much of a truck driver either because he just ran over three motorcycles.

00;08;30;24 - 00;09;05;14
Unknown
I knew you like that. But that little funny story. Brings up something that we have to ask ourselves. How would we respond as Born-Again believers, as citizens of the kingdom of God? If somebody wronged us, how would we respond? Now, some of you might be thinking, well, I'd give them what's coming to them. I wouldn't get mad.

00;09;05;14 - 00;09;40;12
Unknown
I get even. You may even say with Clint Eastwood. Go ahead, make my day. Our flesh, our our flesh. Is that part of us that still battles against the spirit, the Holy Spirit and our flesh is often, prodded by the enemy himself to do things that are contrary to God's will for our lives and contrary to what the Bible teaches.

00;09;40;14 - 00;10;00;14
Unknown
Our flesh provokes and prods us to retaliate when somebody mistreats us and to practice reciprocal love. We're here a lot about reciprocal here. Lately. And reciprocal love is I'll love you if you love me.

00;10;00;17 - 00;10;37;00
Unknown
Now, too many Christians, too many Christians shove Jesus and His teaching to the fringe of their lives. If it if it contradicts the agenda that they've set for their lives. And I can tell you this, the more we marginalize the Lord Jesus in our lives as believers. The shot here and more spiritually and they make our lives become.

00;10;37;03 - 00;11;21;26
Unknown
I promise you that's true. You see, here's what Jesus expects out of every born again believer. Are you a born again believer? He expects you to obey him. He expects you to honor him and to please him. In John 432, I've told you this before, but as I was reading through the Gospel of John multiple times while I was preaching that last series through John, I came upon John chapter four, verse 32, where the disciples were in Sychar there in Samaria getting some lunch.

00;11;21;29 - 00;11;41;27
Unknown
And Jesus was at the the well with a woman from Samaria offering her living water. And the disciples came back, and the woman went into town to to tell the folks in town, I think I found the Messiah.

00;11;41;29 - 00;12;10;08
Unknown
And the disciples said to him, Lord, you need to eat some lunch. I'm paraphrasing, and Jesus said this. I'm not paraphrasing. Paraphrasing this. Jesus said, my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. I want you to know that Jesus modeled for us a life of submission and obedience to the father.

00;12;10;10 - 00;12;37;05
Unknown
And I tell you, it's one of the great tensions of our lives as believers, as we seek to live out our lives in a fallen world, and we're exposed to junk all the time. But one of the tensions of our lives is making sure that we obey Jesus instead of doing what we want to do. What comes natural to us.

00;12;37;08 - 00;13;07;24
Unknown
See, the natural thing is, if somebody wrongs us, we retaliate. That's the natural thing. But Jesus didn't call us to live the natural life. He called us to live the supernatural life. Do you realize that if you're born again believer the moment you repented of your sin and place your faith in Jesus, he gave you the gift of the Holy Spirit.

00;13;07;27 - 00;13;29;23
Unknown
The Holy Spirit is as much God as God the Father and God the Son. We believe in one God who is eternally existed in three persons, all of whom are co-equal. God the father, God the son, God the Holy Spirit. And when you were saved, you received the gift of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit indwells you.

00;13;29;23 - 00;14;00;14
Unknown
The Holy Spirit will never leave you. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption, and the Holy Spirit empowers you to obey Jesus even when it's hard. But here's the trick. We've got to submit to him. We got to say, Lord, your way is more important to me than my way. And it's not easy.

00;14;00;17 - 00;14;28;18
Unknown
I'm not saying it's easy, but I'm telling you, it is absolutely essential that we as born again believers live that way. Now, let me just read the text we're going to cover tonight, Matthew chapter five, verse 38 and 42. You have heard that they remember these are the words of Jesus. Okay. You've heard that was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

00;14;28;21 - 00;14;56;18
Unknown
But I say, here's Jesus. But I say to you, do not resist an evil person, but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat. Also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him to give to him who ask of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

00;14;56;21 - 00;15;08;13
Unknown
Now I know that right now you've you've heard the text, and there there are some things working in your mind and heart.

00;15;08;15 - 00;15;33;03
Unknown
We've got some alpha males in this room. And I praise God for alpha males. But I want you to know that every alpha male in this room needs to submit to Jesus. But I want to explain to you what Jesus was saying here. Let's look at verse 38 first. You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

00;15;33;05 - 00;16;08;26
Unknown
Now where was that? Said? Well, it's quotation comes directly from the Old Testament. Exodus 2124 and Leviticus 2420. Let me read those to you. Exodus 21, verses 23 to 25. But if there's any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life. Eye for eye. Tooth for a tooth. Hand for hand. Foot for foot. Burn for burn.

00;16;08;26 - 00;16;38;24
Unknown
Wound for wound. Bruise for bruise. That's the Old Testament. Leviticus chapter 24, verses 19 to 20. If a man injures his neighbor just as he has done so, it shall be done to him. Fracture for fracture. Eye for eye. Two for two. Just as he is injured a man. So it shall be inflicted on him. Now, I want you to remember we're talking about the Old Testament law.

00;16;38;26 - 00;17;16;00
Unknown
Okay? The law that Moses received when he went up on Mount Sinai. Now, the Old Testament law is divided into three parts. There is the moral law. There is the ceremonial law, and there is the civil law. All of that constitutes what the Bible refers to as the Old Testament law. Now, these directions that I just read to you in the Old Testament were given for two purposes.

00;17;16;02 - 00;17;43;22
Unknown
Number one, to reduce crime and number two, to ensure fair punishment. Now, those are two reasons that you need to really pay close attention to. The Old Testament law did not allow for vigilante justice, did not allow for that.

00;17;43;25 - 00;17;55;07
Unknown
I read about a a mother who ran into the bedroom when she heard her seven year old son screaming at the top of his lungs.

00;17;55;10 - 00;18;22;00
Unknown
And when she got in there, she found that his two year old sister was pulling his hair. And the mom gently released the grip of the little girl and said, there, son, she didn't mean it. She doesn't know that hurts. So she left the room. But before she made it down the hall, she heard the little two year old girl scream at the top of her lungs.

00;18;22;03 - 00;18;32;10
Unknown
She ran back to the room. And that. What happened? The little boy replied, well, she knows now.

00;18;32;12 - 00;19;08;12
Unknown
But that that idea of vigilante justice is not approved in the Old Testament. There were there were guidelines. There was, guardrails to make sure that that true justice was meted out in the Old Testament. But Jesus said, but I say to you, do not resist an evil person. Now, I don't want you to misinterpret what Jesus is saying here.

00;19;08;14 - 00;19;38;05
Unknown
Some have used this to say, well, believers should never take a stand against evil. Well, that's the most bizarre thing I've ever heard in my life. Can I tell you that when you read the Bible, there's only one proper interpretation of the Bible. Now, you might hear people who have different interpretations of a passage, but I can tell you this only one of them is right.

00;19;38;08 - 00;19;43;17
Unknown
Only one of them is right.

00;19;43;20 - 00;20;09;15
Unknown
Some people say we just need to let evil run its course. This is why there are pacifists in the world today. And that is a misinterpretation of this text. I want to tell you why that cannot be true. I mean, what do you. How many of you will agree with me that Jesus lived a sinless life, right? You agree with that?

00;20;09;17 - 00;20;48;20
Unknown
Yeah. He did. He never sinned. He lived for 33 years. He never sinned. He was sinless. And because he was sinless, he was able to go to the cross and bear our sins as the perfect Lamb of God, sacrifice for our sins so that we could be forgiven. But do you remember what Jesus did when he walked into the temple and he found the money changers, and he found those who were selling animals in the the outer courts of the temple?

00;20;48;21 - 00;21;25;22
Unknown
Do you remember what Jesus did? Here's what I did right. He said, oh my, no, he didn't. He fashioned a whip. And there was righteous anger. Do you realize there's unrighteous anger and there's righteous anger? And Jesus was righteously anger over the fact that people were were dishonoring the temple, which was designed to honor God. God the father.

00;21;25;25 - 00;22;00;19
Unknown
And he took that whip, and he began to drive people out of the, the the outer courts of the temple. He went to the money changers and he flipped the tables over and coins went everywhere. And I tell you what, Jesus cleaned house that day. So I think we can take what Jesus did and understand how to properly interpret what the Old Testament is teaching here.

00;22;00;22 - 00;22;06;07
Unknown
He's not saying that we don't take stand against evil.

00;22;06;10 - 00;22;55;21
Unknown
Listen. Bonhoeffer took a great stand against the evil of the Nazis. Against the extermination of the Jews. And right before the prisoner of war, the prisoners were, set free. Hitler ordered that he be hung by a piano stringed when he died. He took a stand against evil. Wilberforce took a stand against slavery in England. Newton took a stand against slavery in England.

00;22;55;23 - 00;23;06;16
Unknown
Don't ever think that because of what we've read tonight, that we're never to take a stand against. We ought to stand against abortion.

00;23;06;19 - 00;23;16;28
Unknown
We ought to stand against, child trafficking. That's going on like crazy in our world today.

00;23;17;01 - 00;23;24;00
Unknown
I think we ought to stand against men playing in women's sports. Maybe.

00;23;24;02 - 00;24;01;23
Unknown
I'll tell you, we're seeing some of the most bizarre things happened in our culture. And when there's bona fide evil, we as the children of God, representing the kingdom of God, need to take a stand against evil. But now, listen. We are not given the right by Jesus and the kingdom to practice vigilante justice. We got to do it the right way.

00;24;01;25 - 00;24;22;24
Unknown
Now, I got Romans 13 one through four down here. Let's read it. Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God. And those which exist are established by God.

00;24;22;26 - 00;24;33;28
Unknown
Hey, look, you may not agree with everything about our government. I don't agree with everything about our government. I tell you this. Our government was established by God.

00;24;34;01 - 00;25;12;06
Unknown
Why? Well, look. Therefore, whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God. And they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for what evil? Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same. For it is a minister of God to you for good.

00;25;12;08 - 00;25;29;05
Unknown
But if you do what is evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword for nothing, for it is a minister of God, an avenger, who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. That's the job of our government.

00;25;29;07 - 00;25;41;22
Unknown
Let me tell you, law and order is God's plan for the nations. It's God's plan for America.

00;25;41;25 - 00;26;22;06
Unknown
Now, this is the road God has granted to government to carry out civil justice. Paul gave instructions to the church in Rome concerning this idea of personal vengeance. Vengeance as it relates to the Christian life. Look at Romans chapter 12, verse 1721. Paul wrote to those Roman believers. Now remember, remember this in the first century, Rome's government was corrupt.

00;26;22;09 - 00;27;07;28
Unknown
One of their their leaders was named Nero. And there's no telling how many Christians Nero exterminated. No telling. Do you know what he would do? He would take a believer. He would soak them in oil and he would tie them to a post. And at night he would light them so that they would provide street lights. He would take a believer, a Christian, and he would take, the skin of an animal, the blood of an animal.

00;27;08;00 - 00;27;19;14
Unknown
And set them loose in the Colosseum, where other animals would just tear pieces as Nero.

00;27;19;16 - 00;27;43;01
Unknown
But notice what Paul wrote to believers. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men, if possible. So far as it depends on you. Be at peace with all men.

00;27;43;03 - 00;28;00;16
Unknown
Never take your own revenge, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written. Now this is a quote out of the Old Testament. Vengeance is mine. I will repay.

00;28;00;18 - 00;28;10;13
Unknown
You say, pastor, but what about those in our world who commit heinous crimes?

00;28;10;16 - 00;28;24;26
Unknown
And they seem to always get by with it. You're forgetting something. One day they will stand before a holy and righteous God at the White throne. Judgment.

00;28;24;28 - 00;29;00;08
Unknown
And I'm telling you, for those who never repent of their sin and place their faith in Jesus, for those who choose evil over godliness. They will face the judgment of a holy and righteous God. Where a God will release his vengeance upon them for all of eternity in a place called hell. This is real, folks. We can never forget that.

00;29;00;10 - 00;29;30;03
Unknown
Let me let me finish here. Vengeance is mine. I will repay, says Lord, verse 20. But if your enemy is hungry, feed him any. He's thirsty. Give him a drink. For in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. I love what verse 21 says, do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

00;29;30;05 - 00;29;41;12
Unknown
When we started this study, I told you that it would make you uneasy.

00;29;41;15 - 00;29;47;20
Unknown
And I'll bet you that some of you are uneasy right now.

00;29;47;23 - 00;29;52;05
Unknown
But I would remind you.

00;29;52;08 - 00;30;15;28
Unknown
That as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is our privilege. To deny ourselves. Take up our cross daily. And follow Jesus. That's our privilege.

00;30;16;01 - 00;30;59;08
Unknown
Now, as we move on into our text tonight, Jesus gives four specific illustration points that I want to explain to you, that explain what does it mean to go the second mile, the extra mile. In verse 39, Jesus who says, whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him. The other also. Now, now striking someone on the right cheek suggest a backhanded slap from a typically right handed aggressor.

00;30;59;11 - 00;31;33;08
Unknown
And in Jewish culture, that was considered an ultimate insult for you to come up to a Jewish man and the back hand him. That was the ultimate insult. Now look at Matthew chapter 26. Just go to your right a little bit. Matthew 26.

00;31;33;10 - 00;31;38;20
Unknown
Was definitely quiet in here.

00;31;38;22 - 00;31;53;07
Unknown
Verses 67 and 68. Look at it. When Jesus was arrested right before he was crucified.

00;31;53;09 - 00;31;58;20
Unknown
He went before Caiaphas.

00;31;58;22 - 00;32;29;14
Unknown
And the Bible says this. Verse 65, Jesus had said, the Son of man. Hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven. You know what Jesus was saying to Caiaphas, the high priest? He said, I'm God. I'm the Son of God. And one day I'm coming, and I'm coming in power.

00;32;29;16 - 00;33;09;02
Unknown
65 Then the high priest towards robes, and said, he has blasphemed. What further need do we have a witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy. What do you think they answered? He deserves death. Look at this. This Son of God. Then they spat in his face. And beat him with their fists. And others slapped him.

00;33;09;04 - 00;33;19;27
Unknown
It's a very demeaning thing. Very insulting thing for any Jew. To be slapped.

00;33;20;00 - 00;33;57;24
Unknown
But Jesus tells us not to trade insult for insult. Now, in no sense. Let me clarify. In no sense does verse 39 require Christians to subject themselves or others to physical danger or abuse. I can tell you this. If somebody were to break in our house and try to hurt Darlene. I would do everything in my power to make sure he couldn't lay a hand on her.

00;33;57;26 - 00;34;10;08
Unknown
If it meant me getting a gun and using a gun, I'll get a gun. If it means me getting a baseball bat, I'll get a baseball bat.

00;34;10;11 - 00;34;30;19
Unknown
This text does not tell us that we cannot protect those we love. It doesn't do that. It's talking about insults. So Jesus says we are to turn to this guy who insults us. The other cheek.

00;34;30;21 - 00;34;43;24
Unknown
Now, I know this is not what we want to hear. Deep inside the the flesh, part of us wants to retaliate.

00;34;43;27 - 00;34;54;20
Unknown
But we've got to trust Jesus to protect our honor and to protect us.

00;34;54;22 - 00;35;34;20
Unknown
Look at the next one. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat. Also. Now, the shirt refers to a tunic worn as an undergarment for a Jewish man. The coat was an outer garment which served as a blanket at night. Now the context here is a lawsuit. It's a lawsuit, McArthur commented, and I quote the attitude of a Kingdom citizen, one who is truly righteous should be a willingness to surrender even one's coat.

00;35;34;23 - 00;36;04;09

His extremely valuable outer garment, rather than cause offense, are hard feelings with an adversary. Paul highlighted this in the New Testament in First Corinthians chapter six, verses 4 to 8. So if you have law courts dealing with matters of this life, do you appoint them as judges who are of no account in the church? Verse five I say this to your shame.

00;36;04;11 - 00;36;13;23
Unknown
Is it so that there is not among you one wise man who will be able to decide between his brethren?

00;36;13;25 - 00;36;46;25
Unknown
But brother goes to law with brother, and that before unbelievers actually, then it is already a defeat for you that you have lawsuits with one another. In other words, here. Here's what you say. Lawsuits between Christians. Okay. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? On the contrary, you yourselves wrong and defraud. You do this even to your own brethren.

00;36;46;28 - 00;37;16;27
Unknown
Jesus said it is better to be defrauded than to be bitter and resentful or spiteful. And then we come to the next one in verse 41, whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him. Two. Now you say, what in the world I talk about? Well, under Roman law, remember the nation of Israel was under Roman domination.

00;37;17;00 - 00;38;06;29
Unknown
And under Roman law, a Roman soldier could take a Jewish man and make him carry his backpack for one mile. For one mile by law. Can you imagine how that made a Jew feel when he had to carry the backpack, of the, an occupying soldier for one mile. And notice what Jesus said. He said, whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him to carry two miles.

00;38;07;02 - 00;38;20;25
Unknown
You say, why? Why is Jesus. Giving us all of this?

00;38;20;27 - 00;38;56;00
Unknown
All of these hard demands about being a follower of him at one. Do you remember Luke chapter 19, verse ten that I preached Sunday says, The Son of Man, that Jesus has come to seek and to save the lost. Can I tell you this when somebody who's an unbeliever sees you as a believer, acting in a Christ like kingdom way.

00;38;56;02 - 00;39;28;26
Unknown
It can peak their attention and draw them to Jesus and make them want to have what you have. Well, let me tell you, in Jesus mind, it's not how many battles you win. It's not about how many noses you bloody. I'll tell you what it's about. It's about how many people you can carry to heaven with you.

00;39;28;28 - 00;39;39;03
Unknown
I coached high school football for eight years. Well, junior high for three years and high school football for five.

00;39;39;06 - 00;40;00;24
Unknown
And I was walking with Jesus. I love the Lord. I read the Bible, I prayed, darling, I was active in church. I was ordained as a deacon real young there in Starkville. I'm telling. I was following Jesus.

00;40;00;27 - 00;40;40;25
Unknown
And I ran into people who were not following Jesus. I never will forget. One time I was invited to a cookout. And at that cookout. One of the coaches started playing pornographic movies. I was outside. I found out what they were doing inside. And believe it or not, they were out there cooking chitlins. I don't like chitlins.

00;40;40;28 - 00;41;13;26
Unknown
Buy some chitlins at night. You know why I was not going inside? I was not going inside. I remember one time we went to a coach's clinic. And there were some coaches that went to, a strip joint. They said, come with us. I said, I'm not going to that thing. And I stayed in the room. I'ma tell you what happened.

00;41;13;29 - 00;41;22;10
Unknown
One of those coaches came back later on and with tears is, he said,

00;41;22;12 - 00;41;53;09
Unknown
Man, I appreciate you taking a stand. I want you to know the Lord wore me out over that lesson. Listen, if we live the way Jesus wants us to live, it may be hard. It may be difficult. But I tell people will stand up and notice. And I'll give you an opportunity to give a verbal and life witness for Jesus.

00;41;53;11 - 00;42;28;14
Unknown
And that's what it's all about. So the last one here, Jesus said, give to him who asks you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you? What's Jesus talking about? Well, the implication here is that the person who asked for money has a legitimate need. A legitimate need. Jesus is not requiring believers to respond to every selfish request made of them.

00;42;28;16 - 00;42;57;24
Unknown
Do you hear me? And I'm tell you, that word gets out. Your bank account will be drained. No, no. If it's legitimate and the Lord lays it upon your heart to help somebody, help them. Jesus is saying that we are to be generous to those who have real needs in their lives.

00;42;57;26 - 00;43;19;14
Unknown
It's also crucial to note that a willingness to forgo one's personal rights and to allow oneself to be insulted and imposed upon, is not incompatible with a firm stand for the matters of principle and for the rights of others.

00;43;19;16 - 00;43;41;03
Unknown
Take your Bible. Look at acts. Chapter 16. Verse 37. Act 1637.

00;43;41;06 - 00;44;14;14
Unknown
So Paul and Silas are in Philippi, and they've been beaten to within an inch of their lives. Now, look at this. Verse 35. Now, when day came, the chief magistrates sent their policemen saying, release those men. And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, the chief magistrates have sent, sent, have sent to release you. Therefore come out now and go in peace.

00;44;14;16 - 00;44;42;14
Unknown
And Paul said, He said they've beaten us in public without trial. Men who are Romans and have thrown us into prison and now they are sending us away secretly. No, indeed. But let them come themselves and bring us out. So they didn't have any idea that Paul was a legitimate Roman citizen. And you don't do this to a Roman citizen.

00;44;42;16 - 00;44;52;14
Unknown
And they're trying to to, to, to to get Paul out of there quickly before they get in trouble.

00;44;52;17 - 00;45;11;00
Unknown
Look at acts 2225. Acts 2225.

00;45;11;02 - 00;45;40;18
Unknown
So Paul's in trouble again. You know why he's in trouble. It's because he's a preacher of the gospel. Jesus said this in the Beatitudes. You remember what he said? You will be persecuted if you follow Christ. You will be persecuted. Jesus told his disciples in the Gospel of John. The world hated me. The world will hate you if you follow me.

00;45;40;21 - 00;46;02;10
Unknown
The world persecuted me. The world will persecute you. Sometimes I think we get this idea in America that when we give our heart to Jesus, we commit ourselves to Jesus, that we're scot free. We're just going to. Everything's going to be wonderful for us, for the rest of our lives. Will go to heaven, will be a cloud potato will.

00;46;02;10 - 00;46;26;29
Unknown
We'll play a harp for all of eternity. We'll have no more problems for all of eternity. That is not New Testament Christianity. I'm telling you, friend, if you follow Jesus, you're going to have a target on your back. That's okay. Jesus had his target on his back.

00;46;27;02 - 00;46;31;17
Unknown
Think about this.

00;46;31;19 - 00;46;52;11
Unknown
For the person who is not a Christian, who not a believer. Today's the best day they'll ever have. But for a born again believer, we can always say the best is yet to come.

00;46;52;13 - 00;47;04;13
Unknown
We got heaven in front of us.

00;47;04;15 - 00;47;26;26
Unknown
Verse 22, verse 22. They listen him up to this statement. Then they raise their voice. Said away was such a fellow from the earth. But he should not be allowed to live. For as they were crying out and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air. The commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, stating that he should be examined by scourging.

00;47;26;28 - 00;47;43;03
Unknown
You know what scourging is, right? That's what Jesus experienced, so that he might find a reason why they were shouting against him that day. But when they stretched him out with thongs.

00;47;43;06 - 00;47;53;24
Unknown
Paul said to the centurion who is standing by. Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and unconditioned?

00;47;53;27 - 00;47;58;24
Unknown
Paul stood against it.

00;47;58;27 - 00;48;25;28
Unknown
We can't look at born again believers. We can and should and should take firm stands on principle. Okay. I guess tension is the best word to describe what we've studied tonight. What we've studied tonight. Cuts against the grain.

00;48;26;01 - 00;49;00;29
Unknown
But how will you respond when someone does you wrong? I want to end by challenging you in three ways. Number one, commit to Christ. If you're in this room and you're not a born, born again believer, if you're watching live stream and you're not a born again believer, the most important thing you can do in your life is to repent of your sin and place your faith in Jesus as your Savior and your Lord.

00;49;01;01 - 00;49;06;27
Unknown
That's the most important thing you can do.

00;49;06;29 - 00;49;38;23
Unknown
God loved you so much that he sacrificed His son on the cross so that your sins could be forgiven and wiped away and cleansed forever. And God raised him from the dead on the third day, so that you could be justified before a holy and righteous God. Commit yourself to Jesus. Number two die to self. It's the hardest thing in the world, isn't it?

00;49;38;26 - 00;50;10;21
Unknown
Every person in this room has a streak of selfishness, and we have to constantly. Take our selfishness and apply the cross to it. And Luke 923 Jesus said, if anyone wish to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Romans chapter 14. Look! Look at Romans 14. Just a moment. Romans 14.

00;50;10;23 - 00;50;40;13
Unknown
Verses eight and nine. Look at this. For if we live talking about believers, if we live, we live for the Lord. Or if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. I like that. If we live, we live for the Lord. If we die, we were still the Lord's. Right.

00;50;40;15 - 00;50;56;08
Unknown
Verse nine I love this. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord. That means boss, master, Lord, both of the dead and of the living.

00;50;56;11 - 00;51;05;27
Unknown
You know this attitude that we're talking about with practice, about some of the great saints of the Bible.

00;51;06;00 - 00;51;43;07
Unknown
When Abraham and and Lot were coming out of Egypt. They both had amassed a lot of animals and a lot of this world's wealth. And when they were coming into the promise of the land that God had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They got to a point and and they knew that they had to separate because the land couldn't handle both, both, both their families.

00;51;43;09 - 00;52;19;24
Unknown
And you know what? Abraham de, he's the oldest. He had the right to choose himself. But you know what he did? He said, Lord, you choose. You choose. That's the attitude that Jesus is driving at in the sermon on the Mount here. You choose and look down in the valley. And it was green and luscious. That's where Sodom and Gomorrah was.

00;52;19;26 - 00;52;56;25
Unknown
And that's where he chose to live. And then think about Joseph. Joseph was so mistreated by brothers. Right? And they they almost killed him. They they they sold him as a slave. He was carried to Egypt, became the prime minister of Egypt and and, Jacob and his sons had to send some of the sons and brothers of Joseph to get some food because they were starving to death because of worldwide famine.

00;52;56;27 - 00;53;24;27
Unknown
And God had sent him there to take care, of the Jewish people that would become the Jewish people and the world. And you know what Joseph did? Man, he could have taken those scoundrel brothers of his, and he could have chunk them in prison for the rest of our lives. But you know what he did? He did exactly what Jesus is teaching us to do right here in the sermon on the Mount.

00;53;25;00 - 00;54;01;29
Unknown
He forgave them. He didn't retaliate. He didn't take vengeance on his brothers. He cried and he hugged them. He said, go back and get get our father in the family and and bring them here. I'll take care of them. They. That's exactly what. Jesus. That's how he wants us to live. And then think about David, King David. You remember that God had anointed David to be the king of Israel.

00;54;01;29 - 00;54;29;12
Unknown
But who was the king at that time? Saul. And Saul was trying to hunt David down and kill David, and David and his men were in a cave, and Saul and his men were there. And and Saul came into the same cave that David was in to relieve himself. And I'm going to let your imagination go with that one.

00;54;29;14 - 00;54;44;15
Unknown
He came into the cave to relieve himself, and David's men whispered to him, this is your chance. Kill him.

00;54;44;17 - 00;55;17;13
Unknown
You know what David said? I will not touch God's anointed. And he took his knife, and he cut a little corner of Saul's robe off. And when Saul had gone down and was down with his men, David came out into the mouth of that cave, and he said, King Saul. I could have got you. But you are God's anointed.

00;55;17;15 - 00;55;58;10
Unknown
That's what Jesus talking about. And look, there's several others we could look at, but that's the way we're called to live. And then take the risk. Here's the bottom line. To live like this is a risk, but it is a risk worth taking. Will you trust the word of Christ? Will you go the second mile with people even who treat you wrong?

00;55;58;12 - 00;56;36;18
Unknown
Hey, God's got your back. You don't have anything to be afraid of. One day. Hey, one day, every person in this room. I'm just going to assume that everybody in this room is a born again believer. Okay. And one day, we as born again believers will stand before the Lord Jesus at the Bema Seat judgment. Now, remember what that that judgment is for, for believers is to determine the level of our rewards in heaven and our responsibility in the eternal kingdom of Christ.

00;56;36;20 - 00;57;03;08
Unknown
What does he want us to do? That's the purpose of that judgment. And you know what? I just want to hear one thing. Well done. Good and faithful servant. Nothing. Nothing in this life can compare with that.

00;57;03;10 - 00;57;31;12
Unknown
Next week we're going to finish chapter five. As God is my witness. We're going to finish chapter five. You've got six and seven to go. Yeah. But I'm going to finish chapter five. We've been in chapter five a long time. Hey let's pray. Father, thank you so much for the men and women in this room. Thank you for the privilege that we have to study your word.

00;57;31;14 - 00;58;03;10
Unknown
And, Lord, I pray that we would line our lives up with what you expect and what you've taught. Taught us in the Word of God tonight. Lord, I pray that we would honor you and we would please you. We love you, Lord. You are our King. Yes, Lord. In Jesus name. Amen. Thank you.
