Baptizing Alex, seeing Elena baptized. Looking out over this congregation. This precious couple with these precious kids. My goodness. God is so good. He's so faithful. He's so powerful. Would you bury his for just a moment?

Our heavenly Father, I thank you that you're a good, good God. I thank you, Heavenly Father, that your power is unlimited. And your grace is sufficient to meet all of our needs. I praise you, Heavenly Father, that when we go through the struggles of life, that you are a rock in refuge, a very present help in our time of trouble.
00;01;17;26 - 00;01;47;15

I praise you, Lord, that you give us a glimpse of the victories of the Kingdom. And we've certainly seen that today. And Lord, I praise you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. And I'm so thankful that I don't have to stand before this group of people and preach the Word of God in my own power. I ask you for the filling in the anointing of the Spirit of God.
00;01;47;16 - 00;02;22;11

I pray you give me freedom to proclaim what you've laid on my heart today. And I pray for those within the sound of my voice, whether they're watching live stream or they're in the room. I pray, oh God, if they're not saved, I pray you save them. I pray you'd open their eyes. I pray that through the Holy Spirit's ministry you would convict him a sin, righteousness, and judgment, and you would draw them.
00;02;22;11 - 00;02;57;09

Heavenly father, to your son in saving faith. Oh, we love you. Or give me freedom in action to preach today. We love you in Jesus name. Amen.

I met Elena's dad up in the baptistry. And David Adamski. You know, David died yesterday. He ran a 100 K race. You know, that's 62 miles. And he won by over 2.5 hours. And that dude's a winner. I can't even run to the mailbox.
00;03;33;22 - 00;04;09;20

But I want to speak to you today on this subject. Lessons from a loser. Take your Bible. Turn to John, chapter 13. Lessons from a loser. Sonya Jones was a top contestant on NBC's reality TV show The Biggest Loser. She was a physical education teacher, and she felt like a hypocrite because she weighed almost 300 pounds, not setting what you might call a great example for her kids.
00;04;09;23 - 00;04;50;10
Unknown
Six months later, after going on the show, she stepped on the scales and she had lost a whopping 144 pounds. Over 50% of her body weight. She came within a fraction of a pound of winning the Competi competition and taking home the grand prize of $250,000. But she wrote a book entitled I quote 44 lessons from a loser Navigating Life Through Laughter, prayer, and the Occasional Fruit Punch.
00;04;50;13 - 00;05;20;03

Now, Judas Iscariot was a disciple of Jesus. He'd been following Jesus for three years. I wish I could tell you that he was famous for being a great missionary and a great preacher of the Word of God. However, I can't tell you that because he wasn't. He was not a winner. He was a loser in the truest sense of the word.
00;05;20;06 - 00;05;54;02
Unknown
He's famous today because he's the man who betrayed the Son of God. In John chapter 13, we see that story fleshed out for us. John, the Apostle of our Lord, wrote his gospel around 85 AD, some 50 odd years past. The the life and ministry and the the death of Christ on the cross, the resurrection and the Ascension.
00;05;54;02 - 00;06;18;25
Unknown
50 years later, John sits down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and he writes his gospel. So we might say he had a unique perspective, but when he wrote this gospel, he had plenty of help because the Holy Spirit of God inspired him to write every word you see in this gospel.
00;06;18;27 - 00;06;54;06

He, more than any other of the gospel writers, gives us insight into the character and life of Judas Iscariot. In John chapter six, verse 70 and 71, he wrote these words. Jesus answered them, did I myself not choose you? The 12 and yet one of you is a devil. Now he meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the 12, was going to betray him.
00;06;54;08 - 00;07;25;21
Unknown
In John chapter 12, verses 4 to 6, we read this. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, who was intending to betray him, said, why was this perfume not sold for 300 denari and given to the people who are poor? So under this was at that occasion in Mary and Martha's house, where where Mary took the most expensive treasured item that she had expensive perfume of pure nard.
00;07;25;23 - 00;07;53;26
Unknown
And she broke that alabaster box and she she poured it on Jesus and she wiped his feet with her hair. And Judas said, why was this perfume not sold? And given the money given to the poor? Now he said this not because he was concerned about the poor little what John Rice, but because he was a thief. This is the word of God.
00;07;53;28 - 00;08;24;13
Unknown
Judas Iscariot was a thief, and he had the money box, and he used to pilfer what was put into it. You see, Jesus had people who supported his ministry financially. And Judas would take the money and put it in the money box. And it was designed for the disciples to use in ministry. But Judas was greedy, and he used some of that money for his own benefit.
00;08;24;16 - 00;08;59;22
Unknown
In John chapter 13, verses one and two. The Bible says, now before the feast of Passover, Jesus, knowing that is our had come, that he would depart out of this world to the father. Having loved his own, who were in the world, he loved them to the end. Verse two. During supper, the devil, having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him, to betray Jesus.
00;08;59;25 - 00;09;29;23

Lessons from a loser. In verses 18 to 20, the Bible says, I do not speak of all of you. This is Jesus. I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen, but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled. He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me. From now on.
00;09;29;23 - 00;09;58;09
Unknown
I'm telling you before it comes to pass, that when it does occur, you may believe that I am he now the that word he is not in the the Greek language. It is supplied by the translators. So Jesus is saying, so that you may believe that I am. That's the covenant name of God that we find in Exodus chapter three that God revealed to Moses.
00;09;58;11 - 00;10;23;27
Unknown
You know what Jesus was saying to his disciples? And Judas heard this. He said, I want you to know I am God, I am God. There are people in the world today, scoffers who who make this this insane statement that Jesus never claimed to be God.
00;10;23;29 - 00;10;52;23
Unknown
Let me tell you, there are seven I am statements in the Gospel of John, and every one of those I am statements is Jesus declaring, I want you to know I'm God. I'm God. And Peter, James and John and all those disciples heard it, and Judas heard it. I am God.
00;10;52;26 - 00;11;23;12
Unknown
Truly, truly. Verse 20 I say to you, he receives whomever I send receives me. And he who receives me receives him who sent me. I love the fact that Jesus said, I know the ones I've chosen. Jesus wanted his disciples to know that he was not surprised in the least bit by the betrayal of Judas Iscariot.
00;11;23;15 - 00;11;52;02
Unknown
And when the Bible says that he eats, my bread has lifted up his heel against me. Jesus was quoting from Psalm 41, verse nine. A psalm written by King David and King David wrote this psalm. And this particular statement. When it hits a fail, his trusted advisor betrayed him and turned into a traitor and went with his opponent.
00;11;52;04 - 00;11;56;14
Unknown
Absalom.
00;11;56;16 - 00;12;16;17
Unknown
In Hebrew culture, the code of hospitality means that if one eats bread with the host and afterward lifts his heel up against him. It was considered a great betrayal, treachery and disrespect.
00;12;16;19 - 00;12;44;20
Unknown
He receives whomever I send receives me. He receives me, receives him who sent me. And I think Jesus was getting a message across both to to Judas Iscariot, to Satan himself, and to the rest of the disciples. And he's reminding them that his work is not finished yet. You see, we're down to the last few hours of Jesus life in this text.
00;12;44;22 - 00;13;03;25
Unknown
There are two things that were primary in Jesus heart and mind at this point. Number one, accomplishing the work that the father had given him to do. And number two, bringing glory and honor to God His father.
00;13;03;27 - 00;13;33;28
Unknown
But he wanted these disciples to know that his work was not done. And he wanted Judas to know that rejecting him, the Son of God meant that he was rejecting God the Father. You see, you can't you can't have this naive idea that you can believe in God and reject Jesus.
00;13;34;01 - 00;13;55;08
Unknown
The Bible says in verse 21, when Jesus had said this, he became troubled in spirit and testified and said, truly, truly, I say to you that one of you will betray me. Now remember, Jesus and his 12 disciples are in the upper room.
00;13;55;11 - 00;14;23;01
Unknown
He is through speaking to the crowds. Now he is zeroed in on his disciples in the upper, and they're alone. Can you imagine the shock that these disciples must have experienced when Jesus, a son of God, said, one of you will betray me? I wonder if their heads didn't snap around. And and they looked at this one, and they looked at that one.
00;14;23;03 - 00;14;28;11
Unknown
I wonder if he's the one.
00;14;28;14 - 00;14;54;29
Unknown
He became troubled in spirit. This word troubled, speaks of severe emotional and spiritual turmoil. Sometimes I think that we we understand the deity of Jesus more than we understand the humanity of Jesus. You need to understand that Jesus would fully 100% God and Jesus were fully 100% human.
00;14;55;01 - 00;15;34;18
Unknown
Jesus experienced most moments of emotional turmoil. Jesus experienced being tired. Jesus experienced discouragement. The Bible says in Hebrews chapter four that he's our high priest, and he's been tempted in all ways like we are, yet without sin. Every thing that you go through Jesus has gone through, except he never sinned. Not even one time. And he cares about us.
00;15;34;21 - 00;16;08;06
Unknown
Jesus knew that Judas would betray him. Jesus also knew that Peter would deny him three times. He knew it before it ever happened. You say how? Because he's God. He's God. He knows everything. And Jesus knew that he was within hours of dying on the cross for the sins of the world. No wonder he was troubled in spirit.
00;16;08;08 - 00;16;43;20
Unknown
And he said, one of you will betray me. And Jesus showed when he made that statement that he was in total control of all that was taking place. He would never taken by surprise. By the way, do you know you can never surprise God? You can't surprise God. And John verses chapter 13, verses 22 to 25. The Bible says the disciples began looking at one another at a loss to know of which one he was speaking.
00;16;43;23 - 00;17;15;07
Unknown
Can you just imagine them trying to figure out who the traitor would be? There was reclining on Jesus bosom, one of his disciples whom Jesus loved. That would be John. The John, John right here, the apostle John. So Simon Peter gestured to him and said to him, tell us who it is of whom he is speaking. And he, leaning back on Jesus bosom, said to him, Lord, who is it?
00;17;15;09 - 00;17;57;04
Unknown
Now understand in Hebrew culture it was very appropriate at times of great feast, like the Passover, for them to gather at a a U-shaped table. And they would lay on their left side, and they would eat with their right hand. And you could just picture Jesus and the disciples around that U-shaped table. Well, on his right is John the Apostle, and John just simply leans back into the breast of Jesus and ask, who is it, Lord?
00;17;57;06 - 00;18;22;15
Unknown
Who is it? And I believe that Judas was on his left side. I believe that because Jesus was about to do something that require that Judas to be close to him.
00;18;22;17 - 00;18;47;20
Unknown
Verses 26 and 27 Jesus then answered that it is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him. Now there are two things that take place in the upper room that are very important. Number one was the washing of the disciples feet. Number two was the dipping of the morsel to give it to the one who would betray him.
00;18;47;23 - 00;19;17;12
Unknown
So when he added the morsel he took and gave it to Judas, he did give it to Peter. He did give it to Nathaniel. He didn't give it to James. He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon Iscariot. Verse 27, after the morsel Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, what you do do quickly.
00;19;17;15 - 00;19;22;11
Unknown
Don't you get the picture?
00;19;22;13 - 00;19;39;01
Unknown
This is a special moment. Jesus takes the morsel. He dips it in a mixture of raisins, dates, and sour wine. Part of the Passover.
00;19;39;04 - 00;20;13;10
Unknown
And he gave that morsel to Judas. Now, in that culture, to receive this morsel from the host was to be highly honored. Now Jesus knew that he was about to betray him. But still, he's kind to him. He's loving. He's reaching out to him. If ever there was a chance for Judas to repent and believe in Jesus. It was then.
00;20;13;12 - 00;20;49;21
Unknown
But his heart was so hard. You see, listen, when you reject Jesus over and over and over again, your heart gets a little harder. You take a man who works with his hands. He develops calluses, and those calluses get thicker and thicker and thicker until you literally, you could take a stray pen and poke it into the callus and never feel it.
00;20;49;24 - 00;21;05;11
Unknown
And that's what was happened to Judas. His heart. You see, the tragedy of rejecting Jesus and betraying him was not a snap decision.
00;21;05;13 - 00;21;39;00
Unknown
This momentous decision had been in the works for some time. Even though Satan had entered Judas, it was Jesus who was fully in charge here. You need to understand that since Jesus was a treasury, it was logical in the eyes of the disciples for him to go out of the room because they thought maybe he's going to give a gift to the poor on Passover, or maybe he's going to get some supplies for them.
00;21;39;02 - 00;22;06;11
Unknown
Jesus knew what he was doing, and he did it deliberately. He had already met with the Jewish religious leaders. He had already agreed to betray Jesus, and he's even told the religious leaders where to meet him when he would betray Jesus. Meet me at the Garden of Gethsemane.
00;22;06;13 - 00;22;16;04
Unknown
And he agreed to betray Jesus. Get this now for 30 pieces of silver.
00;22;16;06 - 00;22;40;04
Unknown
He heard Jesus say in Matthew chapter 26, verse 24, listen to what Jesus said. And Judas heard this The Son of Man is to go just as it is written of him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would have been good for that man if he had not been born. Yet.
00;22;40;07 - 00;23;09;20
Unknown
Judas persisted in his unbelief. He persisted in his treachery. He persisted in his blatant disrespect for the Son of God. I want you to understand Jesus was sovereign over all this that was taking place in the Upper Room. Jesus was sovereign over what would happen in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus was sovereign over what would happen on the cross.
00;23;09;25 - 00;23;41;02
Unknown
Jesus was sovereign over what would happen in that grave that he was buried in. Jesus is sovereign. He's in full control of everything in the past, everything in the present right here and everything in the future. You remember that song? I remember when I was a little boy at at South Taylor Baptist Church. When I was in elementary school, we would gather for Sunday school and we would have an assembly.
00;23;41;05 - 00;24;14;08
Unknown
And one of the leaders would would bring a Bible verse to us before we break into our classes. And I remember we used to sing some songs. You remember that song? He's got the whole world in his hands. I remember singing that song as a little boy. I'll tell you, that song has a great message to it. I want you to know that when someone mistreats you, Jesus has everything in his hands.
00;24;14;10 - 00;24;37;19
Unknown
I want you to know that when the doctor calls with bad news, Jesus has everything in his hands. I want you to know that when you lose your job, Jesus has everything in his hands. I want you to know that when your child rebels and breaks your heart, Jesus has everything in his hands. I want you to know that when your spouse breaks your heart, Jesus has everything in his hands.
00;24;37;21 - 00;25;02;04
Unknown
I want you to know that when you're before a freshly dug grave and your loved one has been lowered into that grave, I want you to know that Jesus has everything in his hands. I wanted you to know that when your finances take a nosedive. Jesus has everything in his hands. I want you to know that when a friend betrays you and sticks a knife in your back, Jesus has everything in his hands.
00;25;02;06 - 00;25;45;04
Unknown
Few truths in this world can change our affections, calm our hearts, and influence our decisions, like knowing that Jesus has everything in his hands. In verses 28 to 30, John chapter 13. Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose he had said this to him. For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, by the things we have need of for the feast, or else that he should give something to the poor.
00;25;45;06 - 00;26;17;01
Unknown
So after receiving the morsel, I want you to listen carefully to this last statement, verse 30. So after receiving the morsel now what? Some more. So remember Jesus said, the one I give this morsel to is the one who will betray me. So after receiving the morsel, he went out immediately to listen. And it was night. It was night.
00;26;17;03 - 00;26;56;02
Unknown
In spite of all the Lord's warning about unbelief. Judas persisted in unbelief, even though he had heard Jesus preach the sermon on the Mount, even though he had seen Jesus take five little barley loaves and two fish and feed 5000 men, not counting women and children, even though he's seen Jesus walk on water. Even though he saw Jesus raise the dead, heal the lame, and give sight to the blind.
00;26;56;05 - 00;27;32;27
Unknown
G listen. Last week we looked at this text. Jesus even washed the dirty feet of Judas, the one who would betray. It. How in the world. Could Judas watch the Son of God, the creator of the world, wash a dirty, nasty fate and not be moved to tears and repentance?
00;27;32;29 - 00;28;06;17
Unknown
But I'll tell you. When you begin to walk away from the light. Into the darkness. One step leads to another. Step leads to another step. Until you reach the point of no return. Well, I'm not a pilot, but they tell me that a pilot flying over the ocean. He reaches a point of no return.
00;28;06;19 - 00;28;15;14
Unknown
Where it's just as close to going to the destination, and deserves to return back to where you left.
00;28;15;17 - 00;28;28;03
Unknown
And Judas. Was at the point of no return.
00;28;28;05 - 00;28;41;20
Unknown
His hard heart would not yield to the Son of God. With the acceptance of the morsel.
00;28;41;23 - 00;29;22;04
Unknown
The tragic case was closed. And it was night. Now, this statement is not just a casual little statement, because the Gospel of John makes much of the metaphors of light and darkness. Oh! In John chapter three, verses 19 to 21, Jesus said, this is a judgment that the light has come into the world, and men that love the darkness rather than the light, for their deeds were evil.
00;29;22;07 - 00;29;55;18
Unknown
For every one who does evil hates the light. You don't know why people hate Jesus in our world today. Here's the reason they hate him because their deeds are evil. Verse 24 everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But he practices the truth, comes to the light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.
00;29;55;20 - 00;30;18;19
Unknown
You see, when you love Jesus. When following him and pleasing him is a primary purpose of your life, you don't mind, but come to him. You don't mind being his friend. You don't mind coming to church and worshiping him and praising him and listening to the Word of God. You want to do that?
00;30;18;21 - 00;30;28;28
Unknown
I'll tell you when you're walking in evil, when you're walking in darkness, this is the last place you want to be.
00;30;29;01 - 00;30;59;01
Unknown
John chapter eight, verse 12 Jesus said, I am the light of the world. He follows me, will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life. When Judas walked out of the candlelit room into the dark street, he walked away from the light of the world. And as the door shut behind him, his fate was forever sealed.
00;30;59;03 - 00;31;41;22
Unknown
He was controlled now by the Prince of Darkness. Satan himself. And the other hand, Jesus, the light of the world, stayed in that upper room with those disciples, those 11 disciples. And he shared love, hope, and truth with his disciples. What a contrast. Judas went out into the dark. Jesus shared his light and his love and hope with the 11 disciples who would follow him and serve him for the rest of their lives.
00;31;41;24 - 00;32;17;03
Unknown
Judas Iscariot will go down in history as the biggest loser of all time. But what are the lessons that we can learn from a loser? I got got four of them ready. You might want to jot these down, number one. Know who Jesus is? Judas never understood who Jesus really was. It's a lesson that all of us need to learn to know who Jesus is.
00;32;17;03 - 00;32;45;18
Unknown
He's a son of God. He's the Messiah. He's the Savior. He's sovereign over all. He is all powerful. He is all knowing. He is the reigning King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And he will reign forever and ever in his kingdom as an everlasting kingdom. Now who Jesus says, do you know him?
00;32;45;20 - 00;33;14;16
Unknown
Do you know him? A pastor I know about him. Can I tell you that does not count. It's not enough to know about Jesus. Hey, you may know about Darlene. I know that, sister. We've been married 49 year. I know that sister. I know her. Not that she has any quirks.
00;33;14;18 - 00;33;46;03
Unknown
I know her. Her strengths are weak. I know everything about her. But you know what? I'm still learning. And that's the way it is with Jesus. It's not enough to know about him. You got to know him and know who he is. Growing the grow in your knowledge of him every day by reading the Bible, by praying, by seeking him with all your heart.
00;33;46;06 - 00;34;09;06
Unknown
Lesson number one know who Jesus is. Lesson number two. Believe in Jesus. Now you say, pastor, I didn't come to do that today. I got plenty of time. Maybe there's a teenager here. You say I got plenty of time. A teenager. Or maybe you're you're you're in your 20s. You say I got plenty of time. You don't know.
00;34;09;06 - 00;34;37;17
Unknown
You got plenty of time. Are you kidding me? I went in the avenues that a 14 year old football player on a football field died of a heart issue. You think he didn't think he had plenty of time? You don't know how much time you've got. Our life is like a vapor. It's here. One moment it's gone. The next.
00;34;37;20 - 00;35;13;22
Unknown
Jesus could come any moment. Are you ready to believe in Jesus now? While you can? And in John chapter 20, verse 30 and 31, John included the purpose of this gospel. He said, therefore many of the signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book, but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah.
00;35;13;24 - 00;35;40;02
Unknown
The Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name. Oh, listen, take advantage of your opportunities. Do you realize what an opportunity you have to come to church and to worship and hear the Bible preached and taught?
00;35;40;04 - 00;36;15;05
Unknown
Take advantage of your opportunity. Choose light over darkness. Choose light over darkness every day that you live. And receive the gifts of eternal and abundant life. The Bible says today is a day of salvation. There came a point in Jesus's life. I'm telling you, when he walked out the door of the upper room, it was over. He was still alive, but his fate was sealed.
00;36;15;07 - 00;36;59;06
Unknown
He walked out into the night and Jesus described hell as a place of outer white darkness. And Judas is going to suffer forever in outer darkness. Oh, how I pray that's not you. Come to Christ today. Lesson number three. Guard your heart carefully. If only Judas had examined his heart. If only he had said. Let you know. Maybe he could get along out there in the in in the night and look up the stars.
00;36;59;06 - 00;37;30;18
Unknown
And he knows those stars declare the glory of God. Maybe he'd just look. Maybe it's not right for me to steal, to be a thief. What does that say about me? Maybe I shouldn't love money more than I love Jesus. If he had only examined his heart. The Bible says in Proverbs 423, watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.

I'll tell you, if you look at your heart, if you'll examine, it will show you spiritual markers, you know, show you where you're headed. Some of you, if you're honest, you'll notice there's things in your life. They're spiritual markers in your life, and they're not pointing in the right direction. They're pointing to darkness, not light.

The Bible says in Colossians 113, for he rescued us. Our God rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved son. Oh my goodness, what a blessing. Guard your heart carefully. Final lesson number four. Walk in the light. Walk in the light. You say, what does it mean to walk in the light?

It means live in the light. In first John one seven, John led to write this epistle. He said, but if we walk in the light, as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his son cleanses us from all sin.

Walk in the light. Hey, every day that you get up. If you're born again, believe. Review. Receive Jesus as your Savior. Lord, every day that you get up. You get to choose. How are you going to live? You get to choose whether you're going to walk in the line, or you're going to walk in the darkness. Can I tell you that walking in the darkness.

Here's the bottom line. If I had to capture everything that I've said, here's the bottom line. Learn your lessons well. Learn them well. You cannot afford to ignore these lessons. So today I'm going to ask our staff to come, our worship team to come. And I want to invite you, if you're in this room and you're not a believer in those spiritual markers, indicate you're headed in the wrong direction.

I want to invite you to come to this altar, insert your heart, guard your heart, and ask the Spirit of God to help you to walk in the light as he is in a light. Let me pray. Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank you for the incredible lessons that we've learned today are lessons from a loser.

Lord, I pray that everyone and within the sound of my voice would be a winner if they would believe in Jesus and follow Jesus and not walk in the darkness. Oh God in heaven, have your way in our heart. If there's somebody here who wants to become a member of this church, I pray that you bring them to one of our staff members.
